Exit Interruption

With the introduction of competition in the UK Gas Market back in 1996, no element of the complex chain, from the platforms offshore to your gas burner at home or in a factory, has been unaffected.

Transco, which is not affiliated to any Shipper or Supplier, is responsible for transporting gas from the coastal terminals to the shippers, 19 million gas users and for the provision of gas storage. This is a complex process, especially during the winter period when gas demand is highest. Transco has statutory duties and is dedicated to providing adequate system capacity to meet firm load throughout the winter.

When demands on the gas transportation system exceed the capacity, it is necessary to reduce demand to overcome the shortfall and maintain safe and secure supplies to firm consumers.

Certain large consumers are required to change to an alternative fuel and interrupt their gas supply for agreed periods, in exchange for a reduction in the transportation charge which is included in the price of gas. This interruption is essential for the safety and security of firm loads (i.e. not interruptible), such as domestic consumers.

This information is designed to assist those involved with interruption in understanding the reasons and procedures for interruption.
